STAFFORD, Va. — Helen Wang’s smile was bright. Her friends say they can’t remember a time where they ever saw her sad or upset.
“She was everybody’s favorite person,” said her friend and Colonial Forge High School classmate, Rebecca Chung.
It was May 16th when Helen was celebrating her 17th birthday at Abel Lake. She was trying to make a left turn onto Kellogg Mill Road when she was hit and killed by a work vehicle. A vehicle she never saw coming because of overgrown trees.

WHEN THE Stafford County Board of Supervisors votes today to advance its proposed roads bond referendum, it will be a bittersweet moment indeed. The vote will take place less than seven weeks after Helen Wang lost her life as she attempted to turn onto Kellogg Mill Road from the Abel Lake boat ramp’s parking area.
The accident happened May 16. Helen turned 17 years old that day. And almost from the moment it occurred, word reverberated across Stafford County that Helen’s death would not be in vain.
Students target dangerous county roads

A group of local teens are taking action in the wake of classmate Helen Wang’s death.
Wang—a 17-year-old Colonial Forge junior—was killed when the car she was driving collided with a truck as she attempted to turn onto Kellogg Mill Road from the Abel Lake boat ramp’s parking area.
The crash not only caused immeasurable sorrow among Wang’s family, classmates and members of the community, but it also motivated a group of students to work toward improving roadway safety in the county.

THE premature death of Helen Wang on her 17th birthday last year was tragic.
The beloved high school junior was killed instantly by a dump truck on May 16, 2019, after she made a left turn onto Kellogg Mill Road from the Abel Lake boat ramp parking area in Stafford County. Because of the overgrown vegetation that blocked her view of the intersection, she never saw the truck coming.

STAFFORD – A group of Stafford County high school students is pushing for change after their friend and fellow classmate Helen Wang died in a car crash on the day of her 17th birthday. She was hit and killed while trying to turn onto Kellogg Mill Road, a narrow two-lane road which winds through the heart of the county.
The call themselves Changing Stafford’s Roads [CSR]. They’re credited with convincing local leaders to take action, putting forward to voters a possible $50 million road bond
Roadway safety advocates bring Helen’s Law to Richmond

A road trip to Richmond may soon help improve some of Stafford County’s most dangerous roadways.
That’s the hope of a group of Colonial Forge High School students who traveled to the State Capitol on Monday to make their case for the passage of a proposed state bill known as “Helen’s Law.”
